ABOUT THE BOOK
The Bereaved is based on the author’s research into her grandfather’s past as an adopted child, and the surprising discovery of his family of origin and how he came to be adopted. Author Julia Park Tracey has created a mesmerizing work of historical fiction illuminating the darkest side of the Orphan Train. It takes place in 1859 New York City in a time when women had no rights to property, guardianship of their children, or their own bodies. Threatened with the loss of her children, a grieving widow flees the country for the city, only to find herself ill-equipped to support her family. That’s when the Friends of the Homeless steps in.
