The children in the care of the Home for the Friendless were taken to Grand Central Station on Tuesdays to be sent out on various trains, later called the Orphan Trains. This is where in 1859, the four children of Martha, the main character in The Bereaved, said goodbye to New York City and the chance of reuniting with their mother. They were soon separated from each other as well as they were indentured or adopted by strangers. Grand Central Station is also where Martha set out to reclaim each of her children as the Civil War broke out around them.
